Joint manipulation is an ancient art which has presented itself in many different healing traditions over time.
Chiropractic Adjustments are the 21st century’s version of this ancient art.

The word “chiropractic” means “to be done by hand.” Chiropractors use adjustments to restore joint function and support the nervous system. They help patients maintain optimal health while avoiding unnecessary drugs or surgery. An estimated 50 million Americans see a chiropractor each year.
Chiropractic adjustments help maintain a healthy lifestyle and decrease one’s experience of pain. They do so by 1) stimulating the vital connection between the brain and body, 2) reducing the amount of inflammation in the areas involved, 3) decreasing muscle spasms, 4) restoring/increasing mobility, and 5) helping to break the neurological feedback loop of pain.
Chiropractic techniques range from very gentle to extremely vigorous and can be used on almost any age and body type. Dr. Smith blends a variety of techniques to craft custom treatments specific to the individual. His more commonly used styles include: Palmer Diversified, Extremity Adjusting, SOT, Thompson Drop, Activator, Gonstead, & Craniosacral
Chiropractic Adjustments by themselves can be quite profound, and when combined with other modalities they can be used to effectively treat many problems. They have been found to positively impact blood pressure, some types of asthma, lower back pain, neck pain, headaches (including migraine’s), and a number of other painful conditions.
Chiropractic Adjustments are generally considered to be safe, but have been associated with soreness, headaches, VBA and stroke in some instances. Joint manipulation should only be performed by a well-trained professional. Not all techniques are appropriate for all people, and a well-trained professional will know how to best treat your body.

Many patients seek out chiropractors who practice the “Palmer Technique.” In truth, there is no such thing. It is a mixture of techniques and the wisdom of how to apply them appropriately. The bulk of the practice is Gonstead technique which has been in use since the 1920’s and focuses on the specificity and accuracy of an adjustment.
There is so much more to the body than the spine. When Dr. Smith uses Chiropractic with a patient, he works on every joint from the tip of the finger to the bottom of the foot. He treats the entire body every time.
SacroOccipital Technique (SOT)
Dr. Smith recognizes that less force is often more effective, especially when the pelvis is not stable or a disc is injured. Sacro Occipital Technique is one of Dr. Smith’s favorite techniques for stabilizing an unstable SI joint and addressing herniated discs.
Dr. Smith prefers using his hands rather than tools, but sometimes they are appropriate. Sometimes the area is too sensitive for manual adjustments. Sometimes the body is too injured or inflamed and requires gentler methods. Dr. Smith does not practice the full Activator Method, but he knows it. It informs his practice but does not dominate it.
Another mechanically assisted method of adjustments that Dr. Smith utilizes is Thompson Drop. It allows treatment of the low back and pelvis without requiring any twisting of the low back. The low back opens with twisting movements, but it can put strain on the lumbar discs. Drop Table can also be a boon if a client is significantly larger than Dr. Smith.
